Rabbit Holes (2021-present)

Project type

Digital collage series

Date

2021 to the present day

Location

Bungendore, NSW Australia

Rabbit Holes began in mid 2021 as a response to living with a physical injury, and the physical and emotional challenges that resulted from such a life changing event. The premise has been inspired by Alice’s decision to enter the white rabbit's burrow, passing from familiar to unfamiliar spaces as we see the child living in a state of flux between the conscious and unconscious worlds, eagerly seeking the opportunity to escape into her imagination when the mood struck.
There is a dichotomous shift both physically and psychologically that results in how insignificant or validated we can feel within a space, whether it exists in reality or in the mind: society and the environment, life and death, flesh and bone of the body, or the barriers of the mind. Female figures are seen – gracefully or awkwardly – moving into or out of the black holes that appear in organic and manufactured worlds, allowing for the viewer to escape their own reality. I hope the viewer to have a visceral reaction when looking at Rabbit Holes: some are thought provoking, others are tinged with dark humour.
Twenty pieces from the series were showcased in RABBIT.DUCK.MIRROR.CAT: Nicole Crosswell and Annie Lok, a recent exhibition at the fYRE Gallery in Braidwood, NSW for the month of April 2023.
